INTRODUCTORY SHETLAND SHEPHERDING
BASIC
SUPPLY LIST
These items are good to have handy though some might never be
needed. It is very prudent to establish a working relationship with a Vet
before you encounter problems in your flock. Local Vets can best
advise on appropriate preventative and treatment methods, taking into
consideration the environment and other circumstances in your area.
BASIC
· Bucket - a galvanized metal one
can easily be disinfected
· Halter
and lead line – adjustable sheep ones or ones made for young alpacas
work well
· Crook
· Portable
panels for penning
· Head
gate or other restraining device to hold sheep for treatment –(optional
but not too hard to make at home)
MEDICAL (Check expiry dates from time to time)
· Injectible antibiotic
(Penicillin or other variety – check with Vet)
·
Injectible Vitamin B complex (Thiamine is very important – check with
Vet)
· Sterile
syringes and needles
· General
disinfectant (Dettol, etc), Strong Iodine or Novalsan for lamb naval dips
· Stomach
tube (small) for tube feeding lambs or oral admin of medication
· Bloat
remedy (commercial preparation – Bloat Eze, etc.)
·
Vegetable oil or margarine for bloat control
· Scour
remedy (commercial preparation – Scour Halt, etc. – or Pepto Bismol)
·
Probiotics (for repopulating the rumen, commercial preparation or plain,
active bacteria yogurt)
·
Electrolyte (commercial preparation for rehydrating weak or sick sheep),
Gatorade or Pedialyte may also work; a solution can also be homemade -
see reference BOOKS such as
Storey’s
·
Nutradrench or Ketomalt (Vitamin/mineral/calorie booster for weak or
sick sheep), Molasses in water is another calorie booster but lacks the
vitamin component of the other preparations
·
Epinephrine (for treating anaphylactic shock, check with Vet)
·
Antiseptic/antibiotic spray on bandage - Boroform, etc.
·
Antiseptic/antibiotic/fly repellent cream/lotion/paste
· Blood
Stop Powder or Wonder Dust for stopping bleeding
· Betadine
Scrub, Stone’s Surgical Soap or other good wash up soap
·
Cal Dextrose type solution (Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorus, and glucose
or dextrose, etc. in solution for treating a number of metabolic
problems – check with Vet.)
· Scissors
(disposable surgical scalpels can also be handy)
