There have been lots of studies that link the nutrition of the ewe during
gestation to the production of wool follicles in the unborn lambs.
More follicles and more importantly, more secondary follicles will give denser
and perhaps finer fleece in the lambs. For instance, G Hutchison and D.J.
Mellor, researching for the Moredun Institute in 1983, showed that improved ewe
nutrition during 95 - 135 days of gestation does result in a higher number of
secondary wool follicles in the lambs. Nutrition during the period of 115
- 135 days gestation will have the biggest impact:
